To niche or not to niche?

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

If you are a service based business like me I know this has crossed your mind at some point. Here are my thoughts on this topic!

The tasks I carry out for my clients require a varied skill set and I am here for it!

For example, a week ago, I built a WordPress website, and a few weeks before that, I supported an amazing organisation with its event operations and continue to do so. And as of December, I will be coordinating a project with a deadline of April.

I have seen a lot of discussions around niching, but my honest opinion on this is that it depends on where you are in your self-employed business journey and where you came from in your employed work-life journey. It comes down to the individual and the experience and skills they are bringing. If you have ten years of experience in events and planning and know the industry, setting up a business around that is advantageous (unless you want a change, of course). If you have worked in multiple industries but provided similar services, you will market your skills and the services you excel at.

I have also found that once you're settled in your self-employed role, you will continue to learn and expand on your skill set. You may naturally gravitate to wanting to work within a particular industry or enjoy carrying out a specific task or service. It will progress to you positioning yourself in a space where you can attract the businesses that require the services you enjoy doing the most, and alas, you are 'niching'!

So be kind to yourself, and work with your strengths. Remember that we are all on different paths. So what may work for me may not work for you.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
